Early Learning Interventionists' Role

The Early Literacy Interventionist is a paraprofessional who will work in collaboration with parents/caregivers and teachers (Nursery/Kindergarten/Grade 1, with a focus on Kindergarten) to develop children’s oral language and learning readiness skills as indicated in EYE results. The ELI’s work will extend beyond school hours to allow for collaboration with teachers to meet student needs, time to document student progress and complete other paperwork, and time to study Professional Development materials provided by MLTC.  This position includes helping teachers plan and host Parent Engagement events for parents and caregivers. The ELI will work directly with parents through home visits that may be scheduled outside of school hours.

I hope everyone is keeping safe and staying healthy, however, my name is Cheyenne Crookedneck I grew up in Island Lake First Nation. Furthermore, I work for The Meadow Lake Tribal Council as one of their Early Literacy Interventionists Program (ELI) workers at the Education department in my home reservation. This program specifies in helping children in their early years of age in reading and learning skills on language development,  as a worker enjoy helping these students because it’s such a great experience knowing that a little person needs help, that is such a great feeling to help parents and caregivers plus build relationships with them along the way. The work of an ELI helps mobilize around the community to can help with the development of their language and/or cultural skills to broaden their education along the way. Through, these experiences of working have made me more confident not only in my work but in myself also. Working in groups of 3 with my students has taught me a lot but I enjoy each session as I got to know my students more and who they are. I am forever grateful to help and teach these children.

I am an ELI at Birch Narrows Dene Community School, in my beautiful community of Turnor Lake. The program I am doing is literacy and it gives me 1 on 1 with the kinder or small groups to teach, I’ve been doing this for a few years and I find that it’s very effective for the kids. This program also gives me the time to bond with the children and their family’s through home visits. Home visits are one of my favourite parts about being an ELI, I absolutely love how the kids get so excited to welcome me in their home and to show their parents what cool game or song they learned that day.
All in all, I really enjoy being an ELI working alongside the kindergarten teacher and parents showing the children new ways of learning through play, song, games and books.
