The Aims of Humanities Programs
The aims and goals of the MLTC Humanities program are to know and appreciate the past of both the nation-state they live under and the histories of their local community, their Indigenous nation and the language group they are a part of. By developing a better understanding of the development of the relationship between the nation-state of Canada and the people who occupied the land before the arrival of settlers, they will better understand their present circumstances, take positive steps to influence the future, make connections between events and policies of the past that will influence their present and future. The overarching aim of the MLTC Social Studies Curriculum is to empower students to take action to better their lives, their community in the context of a culturally diverse interdependent world.
The Goals & Themes of Humanities Programs
- Interactions and Interdependence: Explore and examine their local community, family relationships, interactions between different community groups, families and the broader region and communities in their vicinity. Compare these interactions and interdependence to the Indigenous communities in other regions and under different political regimes
- Dynamic Relationships: Analyze the dynamic relationships of people (particularly Indigenous people) with land, environments, events, and ideas as they have affected the past, shape the present, and influence the future in the context of species loss and global warming.
- Power and Authority: Investigate the processes and structures of power and authority, and the implications for individuals, communities, and nations from the perspective of the shifted dynamic that occurred and having particular regard for where power and authority reside in terms of capital versus land and resources.
- Resources and Wealth: Examine various worldviews about the use and distribution of resources and wealth in relation to the needs of individuals, communities, nations, and the natural environment, and contribute to sustainable development.
