The Technology & Innovation Team is here to support teachers as they implement and support the Land, Language, Relationships and Culture foundations with the use of Innovation and technology in the classroom in alignment with LLRC principles and frameworks. Supports include new and best practice teaching pedagogies that encompass the Future-Ready Skills Framework of Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Communication, Computational Thinking and Creativity.
These skills are supported with collaborative online platforms such as Google and Smart Online, Coding, Making & Makerspaces, audio/video/Green screen creation, PBL (Project-based Learning) and more. When these tools are tied to LLRC (Land Language Relationships and Culture), they can also support Trauma-informed care.
Let’s talk a little about Innovation.
Innovation is the process of taking an idea and re-imagining it in a new way, that adds creativity, value and effectiveness. In Education, the process is teaching and the effectiveness (outcome) is the positive impact on student learning.
Before we talk about the importance of innovation to our students, let’s start with a discussion about success. Success means different things to different people and we need to be aware that what we think of as success may not be to our students or their caregivers.
When you teach a lesson and you feel it was successful, what are you basing that on? Here are some things to think about. Note that not everything will be a measure of success for every teacher.
Sometimes success is just getting through the lesson!Â
Student Voice is a big part of Innovative teaching. It also supports Trauma-informed care. When students have a choice about what a project looks like and HOW they demonstrate their learning (voice), they are much more likely to be interested in completing it. When a teacher asks for opinions from their students, the student is much more likely to feel heard and supported. When teachers and students work together to design projects, the result is students taking ownership of their learning. This supports critical thinking and a deeper understanding of the subject area.
Future-ready Skills Framework includes the soft skills that our students will need for the future. Dubbed the 5 C’s of Future-Ready Skills, they include Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Communication, Computational Thinking and Creativity.
Now, let’s take a look at how ET differs from IT…
The Program Innovation Team falls under Education Technology or E.T. and is a relatively new term for education supports that are related to ‘how’ the technology is used in the classroom. This differs from Information Technology (I.T.) which relates to the ‘what’ the classroom technology runs on. Let me give you an example of the difference. In order to play a YouTube video in your classroom, you will require a computer (laptop or desktop), a projector and a screen. These components are the hardware associated with the use of the ‘digital lesson’ which is the YouTube video. These components are supported by MLTC’s I.T. Dept.Â
MLTC IT Dept should be contacted for hardware and software issues that include fixing, installing or upgrading computers as well as the repair and management of iPads and Chromebooks for our schools.Â
Phone for urgent requests: Toll-free Number: +1-833-236-6582 or via Email for non-urgent requests itsupport@mltc.net. Please provide as much information about the issue as possible as well as your school, a contact name and a contact phone number.
Education Technology supports the use of innovative teaching pedagogies combined with digital technologies. What does that really mean? Let’s look back to our YouTube video example from above. Using YouTube, while definitely useful, is not necessarily innovative. If, however, you want to take that video and create an inquiry-based learning project for your students, that would be innovative. It would encourage critical thinking, creativity, and likely collaboration. This falls under the umbrella of Education Technology and Program Innovation. Further, when a project is tied to both the LLRC Holistic Framework and the 5 C’s of Future-ready Skills Framework we begin to create a space for deeper student engagement and ultimately deeper student learning. This is our goal.
Check out the links below to get started or give me a shout and we can chat about what you want to create, do or change for your classroom. We can work together to find the best way to accomplish your goal, whether it’s a lesson, an initiative, or a pedagogy. Then we can look at what tools are available to support you and how to make the most out of the lesson/goal.
